Nature & Hiking

Trails that lead to wonder

Sunhi-Vista is located in one of Panama's most biologically diverse regions, where tropical forest, rolling hills, rivers, and the Pacific coastline come together. Nature is not something you visit here—it surrounds you every day.

Many mornings begin with flocks of parrots crossing the valley, their calls echoing through the hills as the forest wakes up. In fact, the road leading to Sunhi-Vista is called Calle Perico—"Parrot Road"—a fitting name inspired by the colorful parrots that are frequently seen and heard in the area.

The surrounding forests are alive with wildlife. White-faced capuchin monkeys and howler monkeys are occasionally spotted in the ravines surrounding the property, while agoutis, coatimundis (locally known as gato solo), iguanas, lizards, and a variety of bird species are regular visitors. With a bit of luck and a keen eye, guests may even spot more elusive wildlife such as a jaguarundi.

Because wildlife moves freely through the area, we encourage guests to stay on designated paths while exploring the gardens and grounds and to keep their eyes open—you never know what might be quietly moving through the forest or resting in the trees nearby.

Several hiking routes begin directly from Sunhi-Vista, allowing guests to explore the surrounding forests, rivers, and coastline on foot. Trails lead through tropical vegetation, across streams, and towards scenic viewpoints overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Popular excursions include hikes to waterfalls, natural swimming spots, and walks along Torio Beach towards Mariato. During the rainy season, hikers may discover a seasonal waterfall flowing directly onto the beach, creating one of the area's most unique natural sights.

Nearby Mata Oscura is home to one of the region's most important sea turtle conservation projects. During nesting and hatching season, guided turtle-watching experiences offer a rare opportunity to witness one of nature's most remarkable events. Visitors can also enjoy community-based tourism experiences, including traditional cooking classes, mangrove tours, and cultural activities.

Whether you're an avid birder, a wildlife enthusiast, or simply someone who enjoys being outdoors, Torio offers a chance to experience nature at its own pace.
